UNCG Homecoming Activities Near to College Hill Planned for this Weekend

Homecoming Information from Student Affairs and Campus Community Development at UNCG

Dear UNCG Neighbors,
Homecoming 2013 is coming up the weekend of Oct. 25 to 27.  There are some events that we expect will generate noise and increased traffic, and we wanted to let you know.  If you have any specific questions or concerns, please contact Jim Settle, Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, at 336-334-5099.

The following is a list of the planned events:

BONFIRE
An outdoor bonfire and pep rally will be held at 10 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 25.  Nearby community members may smell or see smoke, and some cheering of students may be heard by those closest to the campus.  The event takes place by “The Rawk” (next to Jackson Library).  The Greensboro Fire Department will be on the scene to insure safety.

FIREWORKS & AMPLIFIED SOUND
A a significant fireworks display, hosted as part of the Athletics competition, will take place on Saturday, Oct. 26.  The exact start time is dependent upon the length of play in the soccer game, but we anticipate fireworks to start between 9 to 9:30 p.m.  Fireworks should last approximately 30 minutes from start to finish.  Fireworks display includes a wide variety of firework elements, similar to the displays at Greensboro Grasshopper games and the annual City of Greensboro fireworks on July 4.  The Greensboro Fire Department will be present during the display, and a Pyrotechnics Vendor, approved by the State Fire Marshal, is in charge of the entire display.

The soccer game starts at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26, and will generate noise from the game play, cheering, and announcements on the public address system.

AMPLIFIED SOUND / MUSIC
Music, including DJs and performances by Sleeping Booty band, will be held at the Kaplan Commons on the Elliott University Center lawn.  Official start time is 4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 26; there will be some sound checking and testing starting at 2 p.m.  Sleeping Booty starts at 5:30 p.m. and will play until approximately 8 p.m.  DJ music will play during the times when the live band is not playing.  The event ends, at 11 p.m.

TRAFFIC
The main Homecoming activities occur on Saturday, Oct. 26.  Traffic near campus will be affected by a variety of activities throughout the day, from 8am until late in the evening.

  • 9 a.m.: Homecoming 5K run, walk, roll.  Event is on campus, but will generate traffic as participants come to campus.
  • 1 p.m.: Weatherspoon Art Museum hosts a variety of exhibits and activities.
  • 4 p.m.: Kaplan Commons, EUC Lawn:  The primary Homecoming 2013 activities start, including parade, children’s festival, alumni tents, and other activities.  The parade, which will include Spring Garden Street, starts at 4:30 p.m.

The purpose of these meetings is to provide a forum for UNCG faculty, staff, students and members of the community at large to review the progress of the UNCG Campus Master Plan Update.  The Design Team will be on hand to present their progress and to receive feedback and comments from the various constituencies.

About the catalog
MODERNISM AT HOME: THE ARCHITECTURAL LEGACY OF EDWARD LOEWENSTEIN IN THE CIVIL RIGHTS ERA
Gathering information from a decade’s worth of research, Patrick Lee Lucas offers a view of mid-century architecture as a symbol of the social conditions of Greensboro and the ideas that homeowners had about Modernism in a community that valued the tried and true.  Lavishly illustrated with photographs, drawings, and other documentary evidence, this 120-page work gives the reader the context for understanding Edward Loewenstein’s work.

With special thanks to…
The Loewenstein Legacy recognizes financial support from the Edward T. Cone Foundation and the Marion Steadman Covington Foundation and in-kind support from Preservation Greensboro, Inc., Weatherspoon Art Museum, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.  The various events, activities and educational opportunities of the last ten years builds on the productive investigations and inquiries of some three dozen students in the Department of Interior Architecture, the Department of Art, and the Department of History at UNCG, as well as the tireless efforts of homeowners, volunteers, and modernist enthusiasts in Greensboro and beyond.

All proceeds from the various events and sales of catalog benefit the Edward Loewenstein Graduate Award at UNCG.
