Police issue two public safety alerts for us all to be aware of

Headshot

Larry Lee Louis

Two advisories from city and campus police that are worth knowing about:

The first is from our Greensboro police community resource officer, M.L. Daniel (336-373-4645).  A man named Larry Louis Lee has been found sleeping on the front porches of homes throughout Zone 110, College Hill’s police patrol zone, and neighboring Zone 130.  If you find this guy on your porch or if you hear about such a case, call the police. If you feel it’s an emergency, call 911; otherwise, call the non-emergency number, 373-2222. Lee has a history of burglary.

Also, the UNCG and N.C. A&T police departments report that men have been approaching women on or near the two campuses and others in Greensboro, saying they’re selling perfume out of their cars. The UNCG police say they encountered the men and told them to beat it.  In case they’re still around, keep this in mind. In case you need to be told not to get into or near the cars of men you don’t know, don’t do it. Especially if they’ve got a story as suspicious as selling perfume out of their car. The A&T police issued an alert to the campus community about this on Wednesday.

Reminder: Big neighborhood cleanup this Saturday, 10 a.m. (Before you say no, please read the part below about free pizza)

Actually, that headline could have said:

FREE PIZZA LUNCH SATURDAY!
for everyone helping with big neighborhood cleanup

But wait! That’s not all! You’ll also get …

  • Coffee and stuff from 9:30 to 10 in the Fellowship Hall of the Presbyterian Church of the Covenant.
  • Gift certificates for door prizes (well, some people will get them, maybe you).
  • And, yeah, pizza lunch back at the church around noon.

We’ll be picking up trash and generally cleaning up around the neighborhood. It’s been a long time since we’ve done this. It’s not hard work. It won’t take long. You’ll be helping the neighborhood out with some other good people. And, you know, pizza.

Please join us!

Get Ready for Some Fireworks!

The folks at UNCG want their College Hill neighbors to be aware that fireworks are planned for the end of the UNCG soccer game this Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014.  A professional fireworks company is managing the display which should start between 9 to 9:30 p.m. The noise will last about 20 minutes. As with all fireworks, you can expect flashes, loud noises, and aerial explosions.

Our advice: Relax and enjoy a free fireworks show!

Springdale Park’s venerable owl and rabbit are freshly painted thanks to the brothers of UNCG’s Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity

The newly painted Springdale Park owlThe newly painted Springdale Park rabbitIMG_20140928_090130200The fine young men of UNCG’s Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity have adopted Springdale Park as a service project, and we can thank them for a long overdue painting of the park’s classic concrete animals. The owl and rabbit have been the subject of much talk and good intentions over the years, but, for some reason, actually getting them painted has been a project no one had ever gotten around to. We thank the bros of Pi Kappa Alpha for getting it done, and in an appropriately colorful style, too.

How One Community Deals with “the College Students Next Door”

Below are two links to articles about how one Baltimore neighborhood works with residents who are also college students. NPR Radio carried this story. Thanks to Joe Wheby for sending us the links!

More runners will be racing through this Saturday afternoon

Late Saturday afternoon, another road race will come through College Hill. The 2014 Race the Bar 5K and 8K will begin Saturday at 4 p.m., downtown on South Elm Street.  Streets affected in College Hill will include Spring Garden, Tate, Walker, Carr, Mendenhall, McGee, Cedar, and Fulton.

Race organizers expect runners to reach the neighborhood by about 4:10 p.m. and be gone by 4:40. Police will be stationed along the way.

Maps of the routes are below. They’re similar but not exactly the same.

Map of 8K race

The 8K race comes up Spring Garden, goes right on Tate, then down Carr and onto campus. Runners will return from UNCG by coming up Carr to Mendenhall, then right to McGee, left to Cedar and back to downtown on Spring Garden.

Map of 5K race

The 5K course comes up Spring Garden to Tate, down to Walker Avenue, up Walker and all the way down to Fulton, and then out to Spring Garden again and back downtown.

Update on the College Hill Neighborhood Plan: Revisions available for review

From Jeff Sovich of the Greensboro Planning Department:

This is just a quick note to thank all of you who took the time last Friday, to stop by (at either Tate St Coffee, Taste Yogurt Bar, or Slices Pizza) and share your comments, concerns, opinions, and preferences!

If you haven’t already had an opportunity to review the current draft of the College Hill Neighborhood Plan, you can find it on the project website at:
http://collegehillneighborhoodplan.files.wordpress.com/2014/09/college-hill-neighborhood-plan-draft-09-09-14.pdf

Text shown in red indicates that it has been changed since the version that was presented in July. The future land use map has also been revised.

But rest assured that this is not the final version of the Plan, nor has the planning process reached the final steps of Public Hearing and Adoption. Planning Department Staff will continue working to find ways to incorporate as many of your concerns as possible into the next draft of the Plan, which will also be made available on the project website.

At this time, the Plan has not been scheduled for a Public Hearing before the Planning Board. It is not yet known when such a hearing would occur, but the Planning Board’s October 15th meeting is the earliest date possible (however, the agenda for that meeting has not yet been assembled). In short, there is still plenty of time to participate in the planning process and help make the College Hill Neighborhood Plan the best it can be, for the benefit of all concerned.

You can stay informed about what’s happening in the planning process and comment further by visiting the project website:
www.collegehillneighborhoodplan.com

Or by downloading the app on your smartphone at http://collegehillneighborhoodplan.com/app/ or by pointing your smartphone at:

Please feel free to share this message with others in College Hill who may find it of interest.

Thank you,
