Free concert this Thursday evening at Morehead Park trailhead

Show of Hands concert graphicEach September, a group of community organizations hold a free concert at the Morehead Park  trailhead to promote voter registration among young adults. This year’s event is this Thursday, September 26, from 5:30 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Click here for information on performers, food and other details. For those not familiar with the name, Morehead Park is the trailhead of the Downtown Greenway on Spring Garden Street at the Spring Street/Freeman Mill Road overpass.

Here’s what Thursday’s event is about:

Show of Hands is a collaborative effort of Face to Face GSO, synerG and Greensboro Jaycees to take over Downtown Greensboro and engage young people in November elections.

In its third year, Show of Hands will aim to increase voter awareness through an outdoor concert. On Thursday, September 26th, Show of Hands will rock downtown Greensboro as a free, outdoor music experience with the opportunity for new and active voters to learn about the upcoming local, state and national elections.

Show of Hands will launch at 6:00pm at the Downtown Greenway Morehead Park Trailhead Parking with live performances. Attendees can connect with information about voting districts, meet candidates, and discuss issues at hand.

Show of Hands is a free, community event hosted in partnership with community development group for youngish people, Face to Face GSO, and young professional organizations synerG and Greensboro Jaycees. The experience was created with the intent to make sure voters ages 18-39 can begin or continue to build the young-adult voter momentum in Greensboro by offering on-the-ground accessibility and voter resources.

This just in from UNCG: Fireworks tonight sometime after 9

An email from Jim Settle, UNCG Student Affairs, received at 5:54 p.m. today, reports:

After tonight’s Women’s Soccer game, Athletics has arranged for fireworks.  It is likely the fireworks will start sometime after 9pm, most likely near 9:30.  The fireworks show is from a licensed, state-inspected contractor, and will be similar to those at a Greensboro Grasshoppers game.

I understand this may be late notice for some; we just found out Athletics had arranged for fireworks.  Athletics has notified several nearby neighbors, but I wanted to send this e-mail to an extended list and to the Mayflower Area Neighborhood Association group to make sure you would not be surprised by the noise.

New College Hill listserv set up; GSO Police also will use it

Screenshot: nextdoor.comA group of College Hill residents have organized a neighborhood listserv through nextdoor.com. The neighborhood has had varying degrees of success over the years with such things. A list maintained by UNCG went away years ago, and a couple different Yahoo groups haven’t really generated much interest.

The nextdoor.com list offers an opportunity to bring the neighborhood a more effective means of quick communication. The Greensboro Police will announce next week that they’ll be using the system to distribute information to neighborhoods. They say 99 neighborhoods in Greensboro are using the system. Downtown, Glenwood, Lake Daniel and Westerwood are among them.

Here’s what the police say about it:

The Greensboro Police Department will announce a partnership with Nextdoor (www.nextdoor.com), the private social network for neighborhoods, to enhance communication among police and residents to fight crime and improve quality of life. Nextdoor is part of GPD’s Neighborhood Oriented Policing initiative and supports Chief Scott’s strategy to better connect with the city’s residents and businesses.”

Street closings begin downtown for National Folk Festival

National Folk Festival logoThe festival doesn’t begin until Friday evening, but sections of major downtown streets are already being closed until next week. To keep track of what’s happening, you can download the festival’s app or check these websites:

From College Hill, the easiest ways to get to the festival will be walking, biking (monitored bike parking will be provided at the Children’s Museum), and riding free city buses that will run to the festival every 30 minutes.

Important Safety Information

A message from UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT GREENSBORO

Between August 13 and August 23, 2015, there have been five robbery incidents in the area surrounding the UNCG campus. Although these robberies have not occurred on UNCG property, we recognize that members of our community are concerned. For that reason, the UNCG Police Department is working closely with the Greensboro Police to apprehend these suspects.

From all of the information gathered thus far, four of these robberies appear to be connected. Two took place on Mendenhall Street, one occurred at Carr and McIver Streets, and the most recent, the robbery of a food delivery driver, took place on Joyner Street. The robberies have occurred on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m.

There appears to be two suspects in common with these robberies. The first is a dark-skinned male, 6’-6’2”, 160-175 lbs. with short dreadlocks or braids. This suspect is reported to be carrying a black, semi-automatic handgun. The second suspect description varies, but is reported to be a medium brown-skinned male with a shaved or close-cut hair style, 160-200 lbs. The locations of the robberies indicate that the suspects may reside in the general area east of campus.

When walking at night, stay near well-lit areas and walk in groups if at all possible. Always be attentive to your surroundings. People who are engrossed in their mobile devices and unaware of their surroundings make much easier targets for criminals.

If you work as a food delivery driver making deliveries to the area, call the phone number of the person receiving the delivery. If you receive a message that the number is no longer in service, consider not making the delivery.

Most importantly, if you see anything suspicious, call 911 or the UNCG Police at 334-4444.

Anyone with information about these crimes is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers at (336) 373-1000.

July 13: Zoning Commission Considers Removing 3 Properties from Historic District

At its Monday, July 13 meeting, the Greensboro Zoning Commission will consider a request to remove 1107, 1109 & 1111 West Market Street from the College Hill Historic Overlay District (the underlying Office zoning will remain).

The College Hill Neighborhood Association urges residents to attend the meeting to speak in opposition to this request.

Residents who are unable to attend the meeting in person are encouraged to email Zoning Commission members regarding this application. This can be done via an online form found at http://www.greensboro-nc.gov/index.aspx?page=1629. (The link to the email form is in the blue box in the middle of the page.)

The Zoning Commission meetings are held on the second Monday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in Council Chamber of the Melvin Municipal Office Building. Click here for the agenda for the July 13 meeting.

Past experience has shown that emails and appearing at the meetings has a strong influence! Take this opportunity to have your voice heard.

UPDATE: The owners asked in both July and August that the case be continued. In early September the owners withdrew the request and told the neighborhood that they were interested in working with the neighborhood association, the city and Preservation Greensboro to work out how to sell the properties.
