Sidewalk repairs under way on South Mendenhall Street

Orange cones on both sides of the 500 block of South Mendenhall Street

Orange cones mark the spots where city crews began replacing sections of sidewalks last week.

A city crew popped up last week to effect some long overdue sidewalk replacement in the 500 block of South Mendenhall Street. Sidewalks throughout the neighborhood need the same kind of attention. It’s anyone’s guess why they picked this spot and whether they’ll continue in College Hill or move on. In any case, guys, it’s much appreciated and we hope you’ll come back soon.

Break-Ins: A Reminder to Use Deadbolts

Earlier this month, there were two break-ins in College Hill, one on Tate Street and one on Walker Avenue. Because of similarities in these two events, Greensboro Police think they may be related. In both cases, residents left their homes in the morning with the intent of being gone just a short time. While they were away, the homes were broken into and computers were stolen. Fortunately, no one was injured and no property damage occurred. It is possible the criminal(s) were specifically watching to see if anyone left their homes.

The Police urge you to lock your doors, even if you’re only running a quick errand. Use a deadbolt, not just the door lock, to secure the doors. If you have a security system, use it to your full advantage.

Parking scofflaws beware: The Denver boot is lurking

Car with immobilizing boot attached

Too many parking tickets

Anyone who has struggled to find a parking space in College Hill will be interested, perhaps even gratified, to see the car pictured above on Carr Street this morning.  The yellow note stuck on the driver’s side window indicates the car has been booted because of an excessive number of parking tickets, the latest of which is under a windshield wiper.

Booted cars are a fairly rare sight in College Hill, even though parking tickets are very common.  But be advised: Rack up too many tickets — and who knows how many are too many? — and you could be booted until you pay up.

Duke Energy delays tree trimming again

Duke Energy has informed the city that they’re delaying their work in College Hill for about two weeks.  Maybe they’re taking some time to reflect on how everybody is so upset with them these days and to think about how to get along with people better from now on. Then again, probably not. There’s no money in that kind of thinking when you’re a monopoly.

P.S. Duke Energy stops in Westerwood on the way here

Speaking of Duke Energy, they came back to visit our neighbors in Westerwood today.

WFMY screenshot

GREENSBORO, N.C. — It’s been the cause of bad blood between some Greensboro homeowners and Duke Energy and it seems issues with tree trimmings are not over.

Thursday, a homeowner says, he had to call police and get the city involved when Duke Energy contractors would not leave his property. …

GREENSBORO, N.C. — People who live in Greensboro’s Westerwood neighborhood are preparing for Preservation Greensboro’s annual Tour of Homes and Gardens.

Unfortunately Duke Energy’s tree-cutting efforts in the area are upsetting some of the people who were supposed to participate in the tour.

Some of the trees look strange now, and homeowner Neill Clegg said part of his garden was trampled while crews removed trees and limbs. …

Duke Energy to begin trimming trees next week

Duke Energy tree-trimming mapDuke had planned to trim trees in the neighborhood in March, but the ice storm delayed it. Here’s what we know abut their plans now:

  • Here’s the map of where they’ll be working (PDF).
  • Homeowners whose trees will be affected have been notified.
  • The Certificate of Appropriateness that was granted to Duke is still in effect.
  • They plan to begin on Tate and McIver “at the beginning of next week” (week of May 12).
  • Smaller side streets like Carr and Rankin will be closed while Duke is working on them.
  • City Forester Judson Clinton and Mike Cowhig of the Historic District program walked the route of the trimming with people from Duke. Several trees were marked for removal. They were inspected, and Mike says it is clear they need to come out because of their condition and/or location. Duke will be following ANSI pruning standards, for what that’s worth.
