Precinct G44 election results

Our precinct’s results were generally in line with the overall results in yesterday’s primary election. Turnout in the precinct was pathetic, 8.5 percent.

Democrats overwhelmingly supported U.S. Sen. Kay Hagen, 121 to a total of 13 for her two opponents. In the primary for the 6th Congressional District, Laura Fjeld of Chapel Hill easily topped Bruce Davis, Guilford County commissioner, 87-41.

College Hill voters backed incumbent N.C. State Sen. Gladys Robinson over Skip Alston, 99-32. In one race where our precinct didn’t follow the overall results, the open District 58 seat in the state House, Democrats supported Dan Koenig over C. Ralph Johnson and Kerry Graves, 63-24-23. Overall, Johnson won with 42 percent, followed by Graves and Koenig.

For the nomination for at-large seat on the Guilford Board of Commissioners, our longtime district representative, Kay Cashion, outpolled Kirk Perkins, 94-28.

In the hotly contested nonpartisan state Supreme Court race, the precinct went strongly for incumbent Robin Hudson over Eric Levinson and Jeanette Doran, 92-48-27. Hudson and Levinson will meet in a runoff election on July 15.

In the Republican primary for the 6th Congressional District, our city Council representative, Zack Matheny, narrowly failed to carry the precinct, receiving 13 votes, compared to 15 for Phil Berger Jr. Berger and Mark Walker face a runoff in that race. In the GOP primary for the U.S. Senate, the precinct easily went for state Sen. Thom Tillis, who won the nomination to face Sen. Hagan in November.

Is it OK to paint your historic house like the one in “Up”?

20140504-164730.jpg

Historic Districts in the News, from Gawker:

“A sweet young family in Santa Clara, California has nearly finished renovations on their Victorian home, keeping most of its historical features, while painting it to make it closely resemble the home from the Pixar movie Up. Their neighbors — a real bunch of grumps — are up in arms over the decision, saying they should have kept the historic theme of the neighborhood.

“Hosam Haggog and Fatima Rahman, the home’s owners, spent more than two years on the renovations, which they did largely for their daughters: ‘They love the movie Up and we just thought we’d give them something fun to be proud of, and actually all the kids in the neighborhood really love the colors.’ A sweet idea, putting aside the possible shortsightedness of allowing your children to design your home based on a children’s movie. But the adult neighbors don’t see it to be as sweet…”

Under Greensboro’s historic district guidelines, of course, you can paint your house any way you want.

This is classic American suburban architecture with freestanding garages, picket fences, hardwood flooring, and linen closets. If pre-war architecture interests you, you will love this tour.”

Results of College Hill tree inventory to be discussed on May 12 in an informational workshop with foresters

College Hill residents and property owners are invited to an informational workshop about trees in College Hill on Monday May 12. Foresters from W. H. Lock and Associates will present the results of the tree inventory they conducted over the past year. The inventory was funded with College Hill municipal service district revenue. An interactive map version of the inventory will be available online.

The workshop will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on the 12th at the Presbyterian Church of the Covenant in the Fellowship Hall.

The foresters also will discuss how the inventory can be updated as trees are removed (due to storms, disease, etc.) and new trees are planted and how it can be used to guide reforestation efforts in the neighborhood. The inventory will help in identifying suitable locations for new trees that will not conflict with overhead power lines. The foresters will also offer advice about caring for trees and proper tree pruning techniques.
